I choose Japan that is a reactive culture, they are introvert, patient, adept at nonverbal communication, and listeners. If they come to study in Barranquilla it would be very difficult because Colombia is multi-active culture, here people are extrovert and interrupt people while they speak because they are impatient, that is, they prefer to speak than listen. Therefore, when a Japanese start a conversation with a person from Barranquilla, he may feel that are disrespectful and rude since they don't wait patiently for him to finish speaking.

Hofstede Model

I will address the Hofstede Model with two dimension:

1. Long Term Orientation Versus Short Term Orientation
This dimension describes howevery society has to maintain some links with its own past while dealing with the challenges of the present and future.
  • Japanese see their life as a very short moment in a long history of mankind. From this perspective, some kind of fatalism is not strange to the Japanese. You do your best in your life time and that is all what you can do. Notion of the one and only almighty God is not familiar to Japanese. People live their lives guided by virtues and practical good examples.
  • Japan is a long-term oriented society, which looks at the bigger picture and views an individual’s life as a short moment in time. In business, this translates to a far higher focus on long term investment rather than short-term profits.

2. Uncertainty Avoidance Index
The dimension Uncertainty Avoidance has to do with the way that a society deals with the fact that the future can never be known: should we try to control the future or just let it happen? This ambiguity brings with it anxiety and different cultures have learnt to deal with this anxiety in different ways.
  • Japanese have an aversion towards ambiguity and emphasise structure and codes of behaviour. Managers are interested in all the facts and figures, and a lot of effort is put into feasibility studies (etc.) in an effort to identify and eliminate risk factors. This is often attributed to the fact that Japan is constantly threatened by natural disasters from earthquakes, tsunamis, typhoons to volcano eruptions. Under these circumstances Japanese learned to prepare themselves for any uncertain situation. This high need for Uncertainty Avoidance is one of the reasons why changes are so difficult to realize in Japan.

Culture is "the characteristics and knowledge of a particular group of people, encompassing language, religion, cuisine, social habits, music and arts"(Ann, 2017). Japanese culture is one of the most curious attracts worldwide, Japan is an eternal place, where ancient traditions blend with modern life in the most natural way in the world. The culture of Japan is characterized by its uniqueness, which differentiates it from other Asian countries. On the other hand, the culture of Colombia is characterized by joy. Cultural manifestations become visible at festivals and carnivals in which music plays a leading role. The culture is also reflected in crafts and archaeological parks, as well as in paintings and sculptures of renowned artists.

As for religion, the major religions in Japan are Shinto (indigenous religious beliefs and practices of Japan) and Buddhism (indian religion attributed to the teachings of the Buddha) while in Colombia the predominant religion is the Catholic (recognizes the spiritual authority of the Pope of Rome). Japanese are suprised that the catholic religion professes something so beautiful that love is and that Colombians have no sense of belonging to catholicism.

Regarding the norms and etiquette, the reverence (ojigi) is  the bases of the social behavior in Japan. The ojigi show of confidence and is a basic gesture in Japan that serves to greet, apologize, say thank you, say goodbye, etc; but in Colombia not is usual and may be exaggerated, the way to greet or say goodbye to colombians is with a kiss or shaking hands. Also, in Japan few people speak on the mobile phone in public, especially on the train or in closed places. If it is urgent and they should do it, they cover their mouths, speak in a low voice and try to end the conversation as soon as possible, but it is not usual, and the mobile is usually silent. While in Colombia people speak by phone in public places, means of transport or closed places with a moderate tone of voice or some use a stronger tone of voice but other people generally do not get upset about this since it is something that is normalized. Besides, the worst thing you can do in Japan is to skip the tail, while in Colombia its is a proble becouse colombians don't respect the other person’s turn.

Finally, the values that represent the Colombian culture are joy and kindness, since it is a culture that receives people with enthusiasm and courtesy creating an environment of good coexistence so that others feel comfortable. On the other hand, Japanese culture is rooted in strong traditional values and in high emotional bonds, in giving and receiving love-affection. The Japanese are devotees of spend a lot of time understanding, sharing their feelings-experiences, thinking about others, mutual understanding, the strength of the union (all are one and one are all), expressing emotions and being grateful.
